Abstract
In the use of liquid petroleum products or natural gas as supplementary fuel in a blast furnace, these fuels are first cracked outside the furnace by partial combustion with hot air (which may be enriched with oxygen) under conditions such that the maximum amount of soot is formed, and the products are then charged to the furnace. Preferably the soot, together with a small amount of the gaseous products as carrier, is injected into the hearth with the blast, the bulk of the gas being introduced into the shaft. Any surplus gas may be used elsewhere as a fuel. Cracking may be carried in regenerative chambers heated by oil or blast furnace gas, or in one or more cyclones.
