Coking processes. - In the process of the parent Specification which comprises blowing hot gases through fuel so that it is maintained in active motion on the grate, and to effect carbonization without combustion or gasification, impact devices c are arranged over the fuel bed a, to limit the upward movement of the fuel, and equalize the passage through the charge of the hot gases from the blast box e. These devices are preferably of louvre formation and are of sheet metal or ceramic plates, sufficiently spaced apart, and sloped, to allow the fuel to drop back freely on to the grate h, but overlapping, and, in a modification, having bent extensions.
