Abstract
320,814. Trent, W. E. Dec. 22, 1928. Coking and carbonizing processes.-Briquettes of coal duet bound with hydrocarbon oil are subjected to treatment in two stages, in the first of which they are heated in a limited atmosphere to drive off water and the more volatile constituents of the oil, and in the second stage, they are heated in an oxydizing atmosphere to coke the oil residuum. In a plant suitable for carrying out the treatment, the briquettes are placed in a retort 18. heated by gases from a furnace. 10. Air in limited quantity is admitted to the retort through a valve 36 and the vapours pass to a condenser 42 the distillates from which are recovered, while the uncondensed vapours are led by a pipe 46 to the combustion space of the furnace. The temperature of the retort is preferably maintained at 500-600‹ F., and the treatment is continued for from one to two hours depending upon the kind of coal used in the briquettes. To institute the second stage, the valve 36 is closed, a valve at 39 opened and a valve 44 swung over to cut off the condenser and allow air to pass to the retort from a heat interchanger 22 heated by the waste furnace gases, some of which may be returned to the furnace through a pipe 28. This air after passing over the material is utilized in the furnace by conducting it through a pipe 38 to the fire-grate. The temperature in the second stage may be higher than 600‹ F. provided that the fuel does not burn. Specifications 146,931, 151,236, 228,862, [all in Class 50, Fuel, Manufacture of], and 304,284 are referred to.
