Abstract

255,620. Trumble, M. J. July 2, 1925. Coking processes.-Coke is obtained from coal, lignite, peat, or wood by heating the material in a retort and distilling off the volatiles by the passage of superheated steam or hot vapours, the hot porous residue being treated with a liquid hydrocarbon and the temperature being so maintaned that the latter is cracked and carbon deposited on the coke. The vapours or light oils are condensed and the incondensable gases are used as fuel. The material is charged into a retort 11 heated by burners 13 and having a a steam pipe 25, a liquid hydrocarbon pipe 31 leading to a ring of perforations 32, a drain pipe 26, and a vapour outlet pipe 36. As soon as the charge is sufficiently heated by the burners 13 superheated steam is introduced by the pipe 25 and drives off the volatile from retort A, Fig. 2, into the vapour pipe 36 of a retort B down which they pass to the drain pipe 26 and so through retorts C and D to a condenser 46. A further retort E is meanwhile being charged. When the charge in retort A is freed of its volatile content, a liquid hydrocarbon is injected through pipe 31 and is cracked to produce vapours which are passed through retorts B, C and D to the condenser 46. Retort A is then cut out and retort E added to the series, the necessary connections being made to the condenser 46. The supply of steam may be continued during the injection of the hydrocarbon.
