Abstract
271,740. Trumble, M. J. Nov. 12, 1926. Coking processes.-Coal, peat, shale, or the like are distilled by the passage of superheated steam which enters a group of retorts such as 10, 11 by a pipe 12 the steam and distillates passing by a pipe 18 to a dephlegmator 19, heavy condensible oils, tars or pitches being removed by a pipe 20 and the steam and vapour passing through a superheater 22 before entering a further group of retorts 23, 24 and a dephlegmatur 37 and superheater leading to another group of retorts and so on. The steam and vapours are heated to about 1200‹ F. in the superheaters. The vapours leaving the last set of retorts are condensed, the fixed gases recovered for power purposes and the residue from the retorts used as fuel.
