Abstract

165,230. Engelke, E. F. March 27, 1920. Mineral oils.-In distilling mineral oils, tars, asphalts, &c., the yield of light distillates is increased and formation of coke is prevented by causing the oils, &c. to flow in extended paths in the stills and treating them with gases containing free hydrogen such as natural gas, distillation gas, oil gas, water gas or blast-furnace gas. The stills may be under ordinary or reduced pressure. Steam may be passed into the stills particularly to treat the residues to increase the flash point. The preheated oil, fed through inlet 3b to a tray T in a horizontal furnace-heated still E, is caused to follow an extended path by baffles and passes by pipes P to a second trav or to the base of the still which is similarly divided by baffles. The residual oil either passes away to the preheater or to the second of a battery of similar stills arranged in cascade. Preheated and compressed gases containing hydrogen are passed through perforated pipes t, t<1> into the oil and through pipes v, v<1>, into the vapour space. Ordinary or superheated steam may be passed through the same pipes. Baffles s<1>, s<2> give an extended path to the vapours to produce reaction between the hydrogen, &c. and the vapours. The vapours from the tray and those from the still bottom may be collected together or may be separated bv a movable baffle d and passed to separate dephlegmators and condensers.
