Abstract

563,647. Cracking oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 20, 1942, No. 10057. Convention date, July 24, 1941. [Class 32] Gasoline of high octane value and coke are produced from crude petroleum oils by preheating the oil to about 500-700‹ F. and discharging it into a coking zone into which gases, e.g. steam, carbon dioxide, flue gas, gaseous hydrocarbons heated to 1500-1800‹ F. are discharged, the oil being maintained in the coking zone for about 10-15 seconds, while the vaporized hydrocarbons are withdrawn and fractionated in known manner to yield gasoline and gas oil. Crude oil from tank 1 is preheated in coil 5 and passed into the top of coking drum 10 to which superheated steam obtained by passing water from a drum 30 through a coil 40, is admitted through line 45. The vapours formed pass off through line 12 to a fractionating tower 14 from which gaseous hydrocarbons are taken off through line 16, gasoline through line 18, and gas oil at the bottom of the tower through line 19 ; the latter may be recycled to the coil 5. In treating a reduced Texas crude, the following conditions are specified : (a) coking drum pressures of 15 lbs. per sq. inch ; (b) steam inlet temperature' of 1500‹ F. ; (c) oil inlet temperature of 800‹ F. ; (d) lbs. steam per gallon oil-18.
