Abstract

Hydrocarbons, distilling.-In apparatus for vaporizing mineral oils &c. by aid of superheated steam or other fluid, the oil, fed through an inlet 32, passes down a pipe 8 through the centre of the still 1 and is discharged on to a series of perforated plates 18. The still 1 is packed with a carbonaceous material such as graphite and is surrounded by two concentric jackets 2, 3. The outer jacket 3 receives combustion gases from a furnace 4 and contains devices for forming and superheating steam, consisting of two spiral pipes 6, 7. Water is supplied to the upper end of the smaller pipe 6, and the generated steam passes into the lower end of the pipe 7 and thence at its upper end into the inner jacket 2, from which it passes into the lower end of the still 1. The vapours from the still 1 pass through a chamber 9 and pipe 10 to a separating chamber 11 Heavier fractions which condense in this chamber are returned to the still through the pipe 8.
