Abstract

164,800. Engelke, E. F. Feb. 12, 1920. Mineral oils.-In distilling crude mineral oils and other hydrocarbon oils and residues, coal tar, &c. to obtain increased yields of volatile fractions and to obtain residues of lower specific gravity and viscosity, the heated oils are repeatedly treated with gases containing free hydrogen such as natural gas, oil gas, gases obtained during the distillation of hydrocarbons, water-gas, blast-furnace gas, &c. Superheated steam may be added to the gas. The oil is passed through a heat exchanger in which it is heated by the residues, and through a series of pipes heated by a furnace. The heated oil is led by a pipe 3 to an injector i from which it is sprayed by heated hydrogen - containing gas supplied through a pipe 12, through nozzles N into an evaporator E. The unvolatilized oil drops into longitudinal trays T on which it is again treated with heated gas supplied by a pipe 13 to perforated pipes Q. The oil flows 'from the trays through pipes P into the base of the still where it is again treated with heated gas supplied through perforated pipes S. The residue is withdrawn through an outlet 1. The vapours pass from a dome D to a dephlegmator for separation of the heavier fractions and to a condenser forseparation of the lighter fractions. The gases may be heated and returned to the apparatus. The evaporator E may be provided with several series of trays, and may be under reduced pressure. The residual oils from the evaporator may be heated to a higher temperature and passed through a second evaporator.
