Abstract

Coking processes.-In the destructive distillation of oil-shales and the like in a closed chamber by means of a downwardly progressing zone of combustion, the combustion is controlled by addition to the air of a regulated amount of diluent gas or gases other than steam. The chamber 1 is provided at the top with a pipe 3 for admission of air, pipes 3' and 5 serving to supply diluent gases such as combustion gases from the process and steam when required. As the combustion zone travels down the chamber, oils are distilled off and are collected in a receptacle 11 uncondensed vapours passing through a condenser 13 the condensates being pumped into containers 16. The pump 14 serves to draw the air through the charge and by regulating the feed of the air and of the diluent gases, which are preferably the products of combustion from the condenser, the progress of the combustion zone may be controlled. The grate may be of the kind described in Specification 204,335.
