Abstract

188,019. Markham, C. P., and Staveley Coal & Iron Co., Ltd. June 28, 1921. Coking processes. -Bituminous fuels such as coal or cannel, and oil shales are distilled downwardly by a gradual and controlled combustion traversing the fuel bed from top to bottom, the progressive combustion and low temperature distillates being controlled by regulating the supply of air and steam to the top of the fuel column and the rate of withdrawal of the volatile products, the gases produced being mainly non- combustible. Suitable apparatus comprises a retort A having steam and air inlets C, D and a perforated bottom plate E, which may be swung on a pivot F to discharge the ash or semi-coke produced. The gas outlet G leads to a condenser I, syphon J, and a series nf water-cooled condensing columns K, a gas valve N and pump M controlling the pressure and flow of gas. The gases &c. then pass through condensing coils P and liquid separators Q, R. A vacuum of 5 inches of mercury may be maintained at the bottom of the fuel column. Only a small consumption of the fixed carbon takes place, a large yield of oils being obtained together with ammonia and organic acids. The temperature of the gases leaving the producer never exceeds 200‹ C. The Provisional Specification states also that the fuel may be fed continuously from below, and that the volatile products may be condensed by compression.
