[Class 55 (i)] Coal or the like is distilled by partial combustion of the residue in a vertical retort in which air, or oxygen, or a mixture of these is introduced through openings at a height of at least one metre above the discharge apparatus, steam being simultaneously introduced at the bottom of the zone which contains the residue. The hot combustion products rise through the distilling zone and the fuel preheating zone. The walls are provided externally with lagging. Heavy oil or tar produced by the distillation may be supplied to the hot zone.
