Abstract

236,420. Fairbrother, H., (Jackson Research Corporation). Sept. 23, 1924. Coking processes.-In the destructive distillation of oil shale the material is heated to a temperature of from 500 to 600‹ C. in a vertical retort 1 having a perforated bottom 5 forming a gas-collecting chamber 6 from which liquid and vapour are withdrawn to a separating tank 8 in which the liquid is retained. The gases and vapours pass to a condenser 10 and second separating tank 12, the remaining gases which may be preheated being returned by a fan 14 and pipe 17 to the top of the retort. Additional inert gases may be supplied to the gases returned to the retort, and the gases, dry and of low vapour tension, assist in the recovery of a large proportion of volatile oils and in prevention of cracking taking place in the retort.
