Abstract

Coking and car. bonizing processes. -In distilling oil from intumescent shales or coals within a vertical retort the material is heated at the upper end of the retort to a high initial temperature (at least 400‹ C.) so as to volatilize pitchlike constituents, and the heating of the semi. coke thus formed is maintained as the charge descends. In a retort comprising superposed flat and semi-cylindrical sections provided with a series of inclined flues B, vapours traps C and amnular flues D, as described in Specification 245,499, a number of gas or like burners G are arranged at various levels, combustion products passing downwardly through the flues to the bottom of the retort and thence to an outer flue E and fan F.
