Abstract
547,251. Carburetted water gas generation. ROGERS, F. H. (Fuel Research Development Corporation). Feb. 17, 1941, No. 2152. [Class 55 (ii)] Oil gas is obtained by supplying oil to refractory material moving downwards continuously through an externally heated vertical retort, and the carbon deposited on the refractory material is gasified with steam, generating water gas which passes upwards to mix with the oil gas. The retort 10 is fed with granular solid material M such as calcined clay, broken fire-brick, or coke, the charge passing slowly down the retort which is heated externally by a series of combustion chambers 20 with separate heat control in each space. Oil is admitted through a pipe 34 and preheater 36, and vaporizing and cracking of oil takes place, resulting in the deposit of carbon on the material. Steam from a pipe 40 cools the residue in chamber 30, and the heated steam passes upwards into the retort, and generates water gas by action on the deposited carbon, additional steam being supplied if required through pipe 44. The water gas travels upwards through the retort and mixes with the oil gas, the carburetted water gas being withdrawn through pipe 37 leading to a fractionating column 38 for separating the liquid and gaseous products, and condensing the various liquid products.
