Abstract

In the distillation and coking of mixtures of solid carbonaceous materials, e.g. coal and hydrocarbon oils, in an inclined rotary retort to which the mixture is introduced at the upper end where the vapours evolved are removed while the coke is removed at the lower end, e.g. as described in Specifications 393,601 and 393,602, the coal and oil are mixed by suspending the coal from a pulverizer 9 in a stream of gas supplied by a fan 12 and introducing the gas stream through a cone 16 dipping below the level of the oil in a mixing chamber 14. The gas stream preferably comprises waste <PICT:0453265/III/1> gases from the furnace 2 which heats the retort 1. The chamber 14 is provided with a stirrer 18 and heating coil 19.
