Hydrocarbons, cracking. - Lighter oils are obtained by heating a mixture of hydrocarbon oil and finely divided solid fuel such as coal, anthracite, or lignite, to a, temperature not above 550‹ C. and condensing the vapours. any gas evolved being scrubbed and stored. With the apparatus shown, a mixture of 1 kilo oil and 2 kilo coal in the hopper 2 is conveyed through the tubular retort 10 which is heated to 300 -350‹ C. by combustion gases that travel from a burner 16 through a hollow rotating shaft 12 provided with hollow paddles 15 and through a jacket 11 to an outlet 13<1>. The gases and vapours pass by a pipe 18 to condensers, scrubbers, and a gas reservoir; the residue is discharged through a pipe 20 as a dry powder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also that a mixture of oil and coke or the residue which passes from the pipe 20 may be distilled. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
