Abstract
244,875. V.L. Oil Processes, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. Oct. 31, 1924, Hydrocarbons, cracking. - Hydrocarbon vapours are cracked by passing them first through a retort A in which carbon is deposited and then through a retort B containing a catalyst, such as those described in Specifications 5847/14 and 209,355, [both in Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], the two retorts being heated to cracking temperature (450-600‹ C.). The vapours may be derived either by the low-temperature, distillation of coal, shale, lignite, &c. in a retort E, or by spraying oil into the retort A from a container M. The vapours are drawn from the second retort through an air-cooled condenser F, and water-cooled condensers G, H by a pump J which passes the uncondensed gases through an oilscrubber K and meter L to a gas-holder. A portion of the gases may be passed through vessels n containing ammonia and thence to the inlet of the retort A where they may be used to atomize the oil entering from the vessel M. Heavy condensates from the condensers F, G are returned to the retort A. The retort A may contain coke or other carbonaceous material on whch the carbon is deposited and may be fitted with a rotary agitator. The retort E is maintained at 400-600‹ C. and is supplied at e<1> with material preheated to 200-250‹ C. The vapours pass through a dust trap e.
