Abstract

192,515. Nielsen, H., and Laing, B. Nov. 10, 1921. Coking processes.-In this distillation of carbonaceous materials the heating medium consists of hot combustion gases which, after being utilized for distilling purposes and being thereby enriched with combustible gases are admixed with air and re-ignited for the purpose of subjecting further quantities of materials to heat treatment. A producer A is used when starting to supply gas to a combustion chamber B the combustion products entering and heating a rotary retort C, the mixed distillates and combustion products passing through a cyclone dust extractor D condensers E and oil washer F. The hot coke is collected in an annular chamber c and is discharged on to a conveyer c<1> and the condensed tar oils are led away by a pipe G. The stripped gases are then ignited in combustion chambers B<1> with air supplied by a fan K and the hot gaseous mixture passed through retorts c' the coke being removed as before and the stripped gases from the condensers E<1> and oil washers F<1> passed to further retorts C<2> where operation is repeated the resulting gases finally being burned to heat steam generators I. If low temperature distillation is required a large volume of inert combustion gas is admitted whereby the incomplete combustion takes place. After starting, the producer A may be cut out and gases by-passed by a pipe J used in the combustion chamber B. In lieu of burning the producer gases their sensible heat mav be utilized in retort C, or where the temperature of the gaseous mixture permits, its sensible heat may be used to heat any of the retorts. A combined high and low temperature process may be carried on.
