Abstract
357,425. Carbonizing process and apparatus; fuel briquettes. TRENT PROCESS CORPORATION, 17, Battery Place, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 24, 1930, No. 35374. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1929. [Classes 50, 55 (i), and 55 (ii).] In a carbonizing process, hot carbonized coal is added to raw pulverized coal to retard agglomeration of the coking coal, the re sultant mixture being heated to a carbonizing temperature and then cooled with water, the steam from which is passed through the charge. Suitable apparatus comprises a series of tubular retorts each having a worm conveyer 28 mounted on a hollow perforated shaft 29 which serves as a vapour or gas outlet to collecting mains 31. The rows of retorts 14 .. 23 are in an upper chamber 4, and are externally heated by combustion products from conduits 7 and a perforated partition 9, the rows 24 .. 27 being in a cooling chamber 5 containing water, the steam from which passes through holes in the retorts 24 and through the charge. Raw fuel, which may be mixed with carbonized fuel, is fed from a hopper 33, and when in a hot carbonized state is mixed in retort 18 with raw fuel from a lower hopper 35. If the carbonized fuel is to be briquetted a binder such as oil or pulverized bituminous coal may be introduced through a conduit 41, this binder being partially distilled.
