Abstract

864,244. Coke production. PITTSBURGH CONSOLIDATION COAL CO. Jan. 1, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 55/58. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). Briquettes are produced from particulate caking coal, char obtained from the fluidized low temperature carbonization of high volatile coal and pitch derived from the pyrolysis of bituminous coal. High volatile bituminous coal 10 is fed to a fluidized low-temperature carbonization zone 12 and the char produced fed to a blending apparatus 20. The tar and gas from zone 12 is fed to a tar recovery plant 16 from which the low carbon content pitch passes to the apparatus 20. The latter is also fed with high volatile caking bituminous coal 11 through line 22, high carbon content pitch through line 26, recycled briquette fires through line 36 and recycled coke fires through line 72. After blending, the materials pass to a kneading stage 28 heated by steam and force fed through the briquetting plant 30. The briquettes, after passing over a screen 34, the fires from which pass to line 36, are conveyed to a thermal treatment vessel 40 where they are shock heated at 42 and then retained at the shock heating temperature of 900‹ F. to 1250‹ F. until the whole of each briquette has attained that temperature, and then calcined at a temperature above 1550‹ F. in a zone 44. The briquettes are cooled in zone 46 and fed over screen 70 to store, the fires from screen 70 passing to line 72. Cool gases supplied at 64 to zone 46 are passed out at 66 through a heat exchanger 68. The heating gases for zones 42, 44 are supplied at 48, 50 and together with the evolved vapours and gases pass through line 52 to a condenser 54, the condensed vapours being fed through line 56 to a flash still 58 from which the high carbon content pitch passes to line 26. Specification 864,243 is referred to.
