Abstract
351,494. Gas-producers. LAPIERRE, T. A., Cloverdale, British Columbia, Canada. March 26, 1930, No. 9656. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 27, 1930.] [Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i).] In a gas-producer comprising a primary combustion chamber beneath an inclined preliminary distillation chamber, the latter is heated alternatively by hot gases from the former discharging into a secondary combustion chamber which is separated from the distillation chamber by an inclined wall, or by burning the gases of distillation in the secondary chamber. The distillation chamber is composed of a number of retorts through which the fuel flows progressively and from each of which gaseous or liquid fractions are collected. Carbonaceous material passes from the hopper 44 into longitudinal troughs 38 in the base of the distillation chamber which is comprised by a series of retorts 39 .. 42, where it is disturbed by agitators 69. The material flows from the distillation chamber through the fuel passage 21 on to a stepped grate 7 in the primary combustion chamber 1. The carbon monoxide resulting from the combustion passes to the secondary chamber 26 for heating the distillation chamber. The cooled gas is withdrawn through a pipe 33 and passes to the scrubber 35. Distillation gases from the retorts pass to the condenser 50 and then to the scrubber 35 and part or whole may be supplied to the burner 56 for heating the secondary chamber. Air and moisture are withdrawn from the uppermost retort and liquid fractions from each of the succeeding retorts. The grate may be raised or lowered by rotation of arms 17 which are slotted to engage pins carried by the connecting plates joining the grate bars together. The arms 17 are operated through a worm drive from a handoperated shaft extending outside the combustion chamber.
