Abstract

8836. Hall, W. A. June 15. Hydrocarbon oils, cracking.-Heavy oils, oil residues, and bitumens are distilled for the production of lighter oils by mixing them with a quantity of coke or other combustible porous material at least equal in weight, and treating the mixture with hot non-oxidizing gases produced solely by the combustion of the coke &c. An apparatus 1 resembling a gas-producer, but having an abnormally high column, is employed. The column is filled with coke through a shoot 5, and oil is admitted at the requisite rate by a pipe 4. The coke is burnt on a grate 2, which may be fitted with a steam or water supply 3. The resulting mixture of producer gas and oil vapour is exhausted by a fan 8 and led to a condenser. The temperature at the zone at which distillation occurs must notexceed 500‹C.
