Abstract

424,273. Extracting iron. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Klockner-Werke Akt.-Ges. ; Castrop-Rauxel, Westphalia, Germany) Aug. 15, 1933, No. 22831. [Class 72] Pulverulent unsintered spongy iron is obtained by mixing 6-12 per cent of fuel with iron ore and then treating the mixture in known manner with reducing gas, preferably a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the content of the latter gas being at least 30 per cent. The reduction may be carried out in the tiltable pan apparatus shown in the drawing in which the mixture of ore and fuel is placed in the pan 10, and is heated up to the reducing temperature by the combustion, below the pan, of reducing gas admitted from a pipe 18 and air from a pipe 19. The products of combustions are led away by a pipe 13 in a hood 11 to a preheater 20 for the reducing gas. The supply of gas and air is now cut off and hot reducing gas admitted by a pipe 12. This gas passes through the ore and is sucked away through a pipe 17 by a fan 22 whence it is passed through a second pipe 18 to be burnt below a second pan 10. Gas from the cooler end of the heater 20 is passed through pipes 14 into the hoods 11, and gases from bunkers 15 below the pans 10 are withdrawn through pipes 16.
