[Class 51 (i)] A method of controlling combustion in industrial furnaces in which different temperatures exist in different parts of the furnace consists in controlling the quality of the media used for heating the furnace by a pyrometer located in the hot part of the furnace and controlling the quantity of heating media by a pyrometer located in the cool part of the furnace. The quality of the combustion media may be varied by varying the temperature of the air or gas supplied, by introducing hot waste gases into the air or gas supply conduit, by varying the ratio of fuel to air supplied or where various gases of different calorific value are employed for heating, the kind of gas used or the composition of a mixture of gases may be varied. The quantity of gas and air is varied by a pyrometer acting on throttle valves, the ratio of fuel to air being automatically controlled in known manner.
