Class 64(1) In a reversible stove for heating air or gas, a combustion shaft 1 connected at one end to a chamber containing checkerwork 2 and supplied at the other end 5 with gas and air for combustion is surrounded by a passage 7 in which this air is preheated before mixing with the gas to burn in the shaft 1, and the gas or air to be heated flows successively through the checkerwork and shaft on reversal. The shaft and checkerwork may be polygonal in cross-section. The shaft and checkerwork extend horizontally, and the shaft 1 is long enough for its walls to absorb so much of the heat of the combustion gases that their temperature when they leave the shaft does not exceed 1200‹C.
