At least a portion of a stream of air, water or other fluid which is to be heated by furnace flue gases in a heat exchanger 1 is preheated in a heat exchanger 3 by fluid which has passed through the heat exchanger 1 and then through a heat exchanger 2 upstream of the latter in the path of the flue gases and the fluid duet interconnecting the preheater 3 and heat exchanger 1 is so arranged that the colder zones of the heat exchanger (e.g. zone C) receive the fluid from the warmest zones of the preheater (e.g. zone D). An interstage heater (not shown) may be interposed in the fluid duct interconnecting the heat exchangers 1 and 2.
