Abstract

662,210. Furnace regenerators and recuperators. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd., GOLLIN, G. J., and ASSCHER, W. B. B. Aug. 9, 1950 [Aug. 22, 1949], No. 21763/49. Class 64(i) To prevent or reduce corrosion of the rotary or other regenerator or recuperator 6 of a furnace 4 by condensation of combustion products, the air supplied to it, e.g. by a fan 12, is previously heated by using a minor part of it to support combustion in an auxiliary combustion chamber 10 and mixing the combustion products with the remainder of the air. The combustion chamber 10, which is made of refractory material, is situated inside an air duct 16, which may be lagged. One or more liquid fuel burners at one end are associated with an air inlet which is controlled by a damper. A grid is provided at the outlet end. A pipe 13 controlled by a damper 14 byepasses the combustion chamber 10 and regenerator or recuperator 6. The air for combustion in the chamber 10, instead of being diverted from the main stream of air, may be obtained from a separate source.
