Waste gases drawn from a hot-blast cupola 1 by a fan 2 pass firstly through a saturator 3, a Venturi separator 4 equipped with water jets and a water and sludge separator 5 before reaching the combustion chamber 9 of a blast heater 11 via pipe 6, gas heater 7 and pipe 8 Hot gases from combustion chamber 9 pass to chimney 16 through flue 10 containing the blast heater 11 and gas heater 7, a portion being by-passed through pipe 13 and pipe 14 disposed inside pipe 6 to dry and preheat the cleaned and cooled gas leaving fan 2. Initially, cupola waste gases may be sent direct to chimney 16 through by-pass flue 15.
