Abstract

951,077. Thermal regenerators. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 16, 1962 [Aug. 16, 1961; Sept. 26, 1961], Nos. 29553/61 and 34548/61. Heading F4K. A plant for supplying hot compressed process gas (e.g. air) includes two regenerator stoves 37, 45, a pressure exchanger 21-30, valves 36b, 43b for connecting the stoves alternately to the high pressure outlet duct 27, 32 of the pressure exchanger, and a supplementary combustion chamber 40 communicating with the high pressure inlet duct 33, 29 of the pressure exchanger. The plant shown includes a heat exchanger 34 in which combustion gases from the stove on " gas " give up their heat to process air from the pressure exchanger as this air flows through a section 34A of the heat exchanger, the heated air flowing then through a duct 36 to the stove 37 or 45 in which it receives further heat before being discharged through an outlet 38 or 38A to the point of use e.g. a blast furnace. A proportion of the air passing through the heat exchanger 34 is directed through a heat exchange section 34B and through a duct 39 to a supplementary combustion chamber 40 which receives a supply of preheated fuel gas from a motor driven compressor 41. Air from the low pressure outlet 28, 31 of the pressure exchanger passes through a duct 43 to the stove on " gas " as combustion air or through a by-pass 44, the proportions being regulated by damper valves 46, 47 these valves also being operative during the changeover period of the regenerator Stoves. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) all or most of the heated air leaving the heat exchanger 34 is supplied to the stove on " gas " as combusion air, and some of the fuel gas from the compressor 41 is branched to that stove, the stove combustion gases being passed to the auxiliary combustion chamber.
