Abstract
760,974. Thermal regenerators. INCANDESCENT HEAT CO.. Ltd., and FALLON, J. T. March 31, 1955 [March 31, 1954], No. 9461/54. Class 64(1) Part of the exhaust gases impelled by a blower 33 through the exhaust pipe 34 of a pair of furnace regenerators 13, 14 having a reversing valve 28 is re-circulated through pipes 39, 38 back to the hot end of the heat-receiving regenerator so as to dilute and cool the gases passing from the furnace chamber 11 to that regenerator. Pipes 23, 24, 26, 27 connect the reversing valve housing 25 to the cold ends of the regenerators 13, 14, the inlet of the exhaust blower 33, and the outlet of an air supply blower 36. The reversing valve 28 is so linked to valves 43, 44 in the duct 38 that the returned gases are directed to the regenerator which is discharging to the exhaust. Valves 40, 41 respectively regulate the proportion of gases returned to the regenerator and the inlet of any fresh air necessary to complete the combustion of and to cool the exhaust gases. Alternatively or additionally, air may be taken' from the air-heating regenerator to complete combustion of the exhaust gases. The hot ends of the regenerators are connected through ducts 17 and passages 18, 19 to combustion chambers 20 at the sides of the furnace chamber 11. Fuel is supplied to burners 21 through pipes 22a (not shown), 22b regulated by valves which are opened and closed when the valve 28 is reversed. The reversing cycle may be controlled by clockwork or by thermo-couples 50, 51 at the hot ends of the regenerators. The clockwork or thermocouples control a device regulating the excitation of electromagnets acting on the fuel valves and on a pneumatic reversing valve controlling the supply of compressed air to either end of a pneumatic jack 30 which moves the valves 28, 43, 44. Each regenerator comprises metal tubes packed in a lagged cylindrical metal casing.
