Classes 123(2) and 123(3) A waste heat boiler normally heated by gases, for example, from an open hearth furnace, which enter the boiler through a duct 3 is provided with a stand-by oil or gasfired furnace 1 lined with water tubes 5 for use when the waste gases are not available, the waste gases or the combustion gases from the furnace being drawn successively through a superheater 4 and the evaporating and pre-heating sections of the unit by a fan 2. To avoid fluctuation of superheat temperature on changing from normal to stand-by heating, the rate of gas flow through the superheater and the gas temperature at the inlet thereto are maintained at substantially the same values by admixing cooled flue gas with the fresh combustion gases from the furnace 1, the flue gases flowing from the outlet of the fan 2 back into the boiler through ducting 6 and ports 8 located in front of the superheater. The temperature of superheat is regulated by adjusting the flow of recirculated gas by a damper 7 in the duct 6.
