Abstract

1361446 Blast furnace operation SNAM PROGETTI SpA 2 Sept 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 41088/71 Heading C7D There is introduced into the furnace a supplementary reducing gas produced by partial combustion of a pre-heated fuel with a combustion-supporting gas pre-heated to at least the pre-heat temperature of the fuel and particularly to 800‹ -1500‹ C., the combustion products preferably being cooled either by passage through a steam-generating boiler or by introduction of a hydrogen-rich gas. Preferred fuels are methane, naphtha or fuel oil, and combustion with oxygen, or air with or with- out oxygen enrichment, may be carried out so that the products contain carbon black which also passes to the blast furnace. The combustion may take place in a chamber separate from the furnace, or in a series of burners mounted in the furnace wall, when a coolant, particularly coke oven gas, may be introduced through tubes located immediately above the burners so that it mixes with the products. In one embodiment air blast passes alternately through Cowper stoves 2, 3, one part forming the normal blast through line 5 while the other passes to combustion chamber 9 where it meets pre-heated fuel from line 10. The products pass through heat exchanger 12 to main 14 and tuyeres 15.
