Abstract

1,206,455. Burning waste gases. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 4 Dec., 1967, No. 55076/67. Heading F4B. A process for the combustion of low heating value gaseous fuels (i.e. fuels with a heating value <10,000 BTu/lb), which contain from about 5-15 volume per cent carbon monoxide and from about 80-95 volume per cent inert gases, is characterized by sequentially burning a high heating value fuel (>10,000 BTu/lb.) to produce hot combustion gases, mixing the hot combustion gases with a portion of the low heating value fuel and burning the CO in the low heating value fuel in a first stage, mixing the hot combustion gases from the first stage with the remainder of the low heating value fuel and burning the CO in the low heating value fuel in a second stage. A furnace for the above process comprises a horizontal combustion chamber 11, a vertical heat transfer zone 13 and a transition zone 12, said combustion zone 11 having a plurality of low heat value fuel supply means 4, 5 spaced apart along the zone defining combustion chambers 6, 7, and burner means 9 positioned in the end of said zone 11 to supply hot combustion gases from the combustion of high heat value fuel to the combustion zone. As shown, regenerator off gas at a temperature of 400-1100‹ F. is passed into distribution ducts 7, 6 defining first and second stage combustion areas. The burner 9, fed with high heat value fuel and with sufficient excess air from line 10 for the first stage of CO combustion, provides heat output sufficient to heat the first stage combustion areas to 1100-1400‹ F., thus burning the carbon monoxide completely. The hot combustion gases from the first stage pass to the second stage, where the other portion of the relatively cold CO containing gas is introduced into the combustion zone along with combustion air from line 32, the high temperature gas mass being used to heat the gas to ignition temperature. The combustion gases, now generally at 1600-2200‹ F. pass through the transition zone to be used for generating steam and for heating the feed to a catalytic cracking unit.
