Abstract

455,485. Furnaces and furnace atmospheres. BRAYSHAW FURNACES & TOOLS, Ltd., BRAYSBLAW, S. N., and RUSHTON, F., Belle Vue Works, Boundary Street, Manchester. April 16, 1935, No. 13137/36. Divided out of 455,436. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] A furnace chamber is heated externally by the partial combustion of charcoal in a producer, and internally by the combustion with air of the gas produced, the supply of air being controlled to give the desired neutral or reducing atmosphere for the goods under treatment. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, gas from the producer A passes through the perforated collector C to the combustion chamber C<1>, where it meets a supply of secondary air from the pipe c, the products of combustion passing through a work chamber D, and thence either directly, or through a second work chamber D<1>, to the exhaust flue D<2>. The fuel may be'dried in the hopper B<1> by the heat of the waste gases, or in the container B by the heat of the producer, the gas being allowed to escape during the drying period through a valve in the air-tight cover b. The secondary air may be heated by passing the supply pipe c through the exhaust flue and both primary and secondary air supplies may be dried if an atmosphere free from hydrogen or water vapour is desired. In a modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), two producers are arranged beneath the floor of the firing-zone of a tunnel furnace, into which the gas passes through side ports where it meets the secondary air supply. In another modification, Fig. 7, in which the producer is at one side of the furnace N, bottom heat is supplied by the hot gas in the flues n, and top heat by the combustion of this gas with air supplied by the pipe n<2>. The constitution of the furnace atmosphere may be automatically controlled as described in Specification 455,436.
