Abstract
739,617. Furnaces for treating solids in suspension. CLIFT, J. J. Jan. 13, 1954, No. 974/54. Class 51 (2). A furnace for expanding perlite and like minerals comprises a vertically disposed, refractory lined outer casing 11 formed with an enlarged 'bowl-shaped base 4, an inner concentric venturishaped air jacket 14, superposed upper annular channel members 21 and 24 defining a waste gas header with one or more offtakes 25, and a part conical member 26 carried by the channel member 24 and closed by a wall 28 formed with a series of holes 29 and itself carrying a venturi tube 30 near which is disposed a burner (not shown). The burner discharges through the venturi 30 into an inner heat treatment chamber 13 defined by the air jacket 14, and perlite fed through one or more openings 27 in the conical member 26 is carried downwardly by the combustion gases through the chamber 13 and then upwardly through a secondary heating chamber 13A to a passage 23 leading to the waste gas header. Expanded perlite is carried off by the waste gases through the offtakes 25 and the heavier unexpanded material falls back into the chamber 13 to be re-cycled. Air heated in the jacket 14 may be used in the burner.
