A stove or recuperator for heating air comprises a nest of flue tubes 36 arranged above a burner or flue gas radiation chamber 28. At least the top wall of the chamber is cooled by an air jacket 27 and air to be heated flows first over the tubes 36 and then through the jacket 27. Alternatively the air may flow first through the jacket and then over the tubes. The hot gases leave the radiation chamber 28 through ports 34 leading to an intermediate space 35 from which the gases pass to and through the flue tubes 36.
