Abstract

A continuous furnace for annealing articles such as iron castings comprises an annealing chamber 2 heated by radiant tubes 3 or electrical heating elements into which chamber treatment gas, e.g. air and water vapour, is introduced by devices 4 and the reaction gas so formed is burnt with air in one or more chambers, e.g. 5 and 6, to pre-heat or after-treat the articles. Gates 7 are provided to allow passage of the articles along skid rails. In the region of the gates apertures 8 for the reaction gas and means 9 for supplying combustion air are provided. The chambers 5 and/or 6 may have an explosion flap 12 and electrical coils or pilot burners 13 to ignite the air and gas mixture. <PICT:0981139/C6-C7/1>
