Abstract

1,010,592. Forming special furnace atmospheres; heat treatment furnaces. EAST MIDLAND GAS BOARD. May 3, 1962 [Feb. 3, 1961], No. 4265/61. Heading F4B. Combustible medium is introduced into the work chamber of a heat treatment furnace and induced by an air or oxygen jet into a combustion space unexposed to the interior of the work chamber but within the said chamber. A heattreatment furnace, Fig. 1, is partly heated by the incomplete combustion of fluid fuel from burners 17 in a space 16 below the hearth, and the combustion is completed in radiant tubes 18, into which the partially burnt gases forming a protective atmosphere in treatment chamber are drawn together with air and/or oxygen from nozzles 20. The gas flows and pressures within the tubes 18 and the heat treatment chamber are maintained at such values that no oxidizing agents seep into the chamber. The furnace may be heated up by supplying sufficient air to the burners 17 to complete combustion within the space 16 and the treatment chamber, or completely unburnt gas may be supplied to form the protective atmosphere. In another embodiment, a burner at the charging end of a furnace with a conveyer carrying material to fall into a quench bath at the other end provides a protective atmosphere of incompletely burnt fuel, the combustion being completed in radiant tubes arranged above and below the upper run of the conveyer. In a two-section normalizing furnace, Figs. 4 and 6, burners 56 supply fuel and air for partial combustion in passages 54 leading to outlets 55 in the ridged hearth, and combustion is completed in radiant tubes 60 leading to a flue 48 common to both sections. A soaking pit is heated by partial combustion of fuel and air from burners near the furnace crown, and radiant tubes extend from near the bottom of the furnace, passing out through the walls to a ring flue arranged below the burners. Further fuel may be supplied to the radiant tubes, or supplementary electrical heating may be provided.
