Abstract

140,578. Benjamin, G. H. March 6, 1919. Tunnel kilns; air, supplying.-A tunnel kiln is heated by an external combustion chamber and by hot air from externally-arranged hot-blast stoves. The combustion chamber 8 is of a size to permit free evolution of flame, and contains means, such as a mass of bricks 10 located in line with the burners 9, to accelerate combustion. The hot products from the combustion chamber are led by flues 21 to the hot-blast stoves, one pair of which, say 23, 24, is being heated while the other pair 23<a>, 24<a> is supplying hot air past reversing-valves 32 and through flues 29 to outlets 31 at the bottom of the inner walls of the kiln chamber. The hot air, after circulation through the goods, is withdrawn by a longitudinal flue 37 and pump 38, and may be passed to a recuperator. The stoves may be heated, in addition, by burners 33. The burners 9 are arranged along the combustion chamber 8 at both sides and towards the lower and wider parts thereof, and are independenly controllable so as to vary the heating along the tunnel.
