Abstract

164,376. Williamson, J. Sept. 3, 1919. Tunnel kilns.-In a tunnel kiln for firing pottery &c., the goods are heated by a double circulation of air heated by a flue located in a central longitudinal tunnel in the-oven structure below the oven space, which communicates at the top and bottom with the oven space. The kiln comprises heating, firing, and cooling zones B, C, A with gas-fired combustion chambers below and at one end of the firing-zone, as shown at m, or in a double wall space x at either side of the oven space. Gas from a main o is supplied to the combustion chamber m by an inlet n, or to the side chambers by flues 4, 5, air for combustion being drawn from the cooling-zone A, and combustion products passing in either case to the heating-flue e. Heated air circulates by the passages k, It, Fig. 4, and the inner walls v of the oven space may be hollow and perforated, as shown at 1, 2, Fig. 5, to give additional air circulation. In some cases, flames from the side combustion chambers 12, Fig. 12, may pass direct to the goods by passages 11 in the inner walls 10. The goods are carried on perforated supports 17 extending over the central wall a' of the tunnel and resting on trucks running in guideways 19 on rollers, wheels, or. balls supplied with cooling-means, Fig. 15; or the trucks may run in water troughs and carry sand-sealed heads to prevent leakage of vapour.
