Abstract
306,813. Robertson, H. M. Feb. 25, 1928, [Convention date]. Tunnel kilns; walls; air, supplying.-In a continuous tunnel kiln of the muffle type, comprising a heating zone 4 and main and secondary cooling zones 5, 6, air, heated in the zone 5, is supplied under pressure to chambers 37 arranged along the sides of the heating zone and enclosing conduits 32 through which the hot gases pass to spaces 33 connected by pipes 41 to an exhaust fan. The chambers 37 are divided by vertical partitions 34 and are formed with upper and lower openings 39, 38 which allows a continuous circulation of the air through the ware on the trucks 18 and the heating chambers 37. At their inner ends, the conduits 32 are connected to secondary combustion chambers 25 which communicate through openings 26 with main combustion chambers 24, these latter being fired by gas or oil burners 30 or by solid fuel and formed with a passage 27 in the lower walls for the supply of air for combustion. In the main cooling zone 5, conduits 46, supported by pillars 45, extend between air inlet spaces 48 and chambers 49, the latter being connected by a transverse flue 50 from which the heated air is withdrawn by a fan and supplied to pipes 54<a> having valved branches 55 leading to spaces 57 below the side chambers 37. The excess air is withdrawn from the tunnel through pipes 40 connected to the exhaust fan and serves to preheat the entering goods during its passage towards the inlet end of the kiln. The cooling in the zone 6 is effected by air which is admitted to a chamber 62, Fig. 7, adjacent the roof and passes through pipes 61 to side chambers 59 having outlets 60. The tunnel itself has inner and outer walls 7, 9 separated by a layer 8 of heat insulating material which is covered by blocks 12 abutting against the pediments 13 of the arched roof 14. A layer 15 of heat insulating material covers the entire top surface of the kiln between the outer walls 9. Overheating of the trucks 18 is prevented by air pipes 68.
