Abstract

Tunnel kilns.-The cooling-zone of a tunnel kiln fired by coal, gas, or oil is lined with heatabsorbing bodies, such as cast-iron plates, forming flues through which air is passed, so that the cooling-air does not come into contact with the goods being cooled. The heated air is used for combustion, or in drying tunnels, floors, or closets, or for other purpose. Figs. I and II show a tunnel kiln above which is an air-pipe 15 leading from a fan 14; the air passes by a central branch 17 to a keystone-section cast-iron flue 9 along the crown, and by side branches 16 to shorter flues 7, vertical fluee 6, and lower horizontal flues 8 in succession, and thence to the burners, drying- tunnels, fires, &c. The flue 9 conducts the air to a hollow crown or roof above the heating-zone of the kiln, whence it passes to the fires &c. The inner faces 18 of the outer walls of the flues 6 are lined with asbestos or other heat insulator.
