Abstract

1,208,134. Continuous carburizing furnaces. GIBBONS BROS. Ltd. 18 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 13551/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] In a continuous carburizing furnace comprising a heating chamber 19, a carburizing chamber 20 and a diffusing chamber 21, work to be treated is transferred from the heating chamber 19 to the carburizing chamber 20 through interconnecting door means 45 when the furnace inlet door 34 and the outlet door 61 are both closed. The work is carried on trays which are in turn supported on trackways (see Figs. 3 and 5). Pushers 139, 41, 44, 55 and 60 are provided where shown to advance the work through the furnace. The heating and carburizing chambers are each provided with radiant tube burners and with roof fans (see Figs. 2 and 4). The work, on leaving the diffusing chamber 21 via outlet door 61, thereafter passes through a quench tank 11, a washer 12 and a tempering furnace 13. Energization of the pushers and of the interconnecting door means is controlled by an electrical timing circuit (Fig. 7, not shown) to give the required sequence of operation. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), a separate diffusing chamber (70) incorporating heating elements and having a rotary hearth is provided at the downstream end of the carburizing chamber (71).
