Abstract
1,040,931. Combined electric and combustion heated continuous furnaces. WEST MIDLANDS GAS BOARD, and GARRINGTONS Ltd. March 4, 1963 [March 3, 1962], No. 8317/62. Heading F4B. A metal heating furnace comprises a continuous path for the passage of metal billets progressively through an initial phase of the furnace in which the metal is heated by burners and a final phase which includes induction coil heating. Billets (not shown) enter a tunnel 7 from a guide 8 and are slid along rails 9 by a pusher (not shown) through a gas-fired furnace 4. Downwardly directed burners 13 and laterally directed burners 14 heat a forcing section 11, the resulting gases heating a preheat section 10 before escaping through a flue outlet 15 in which an eductor 16 is provided. Laterally directed small burners 17 heat a soaking section 12 in which the billets acquire a uniform predetermined temperature. Manual or automatic control means are provided for the burners. A flue outlet 18 with eductor 19 withdraws products emanating mainly from the forcing section and prevents them passing to a short induction coil 5. From the exit end of tunnel 7 the billets pass to the induction coil 5, where their temperature is raised to the ultimate value required, and are then discharged by shoot 20. The rails 9 through the induction coil and the induction coil itself are water cooled.
