Abstract

A walking beam type metal heating furnace is provided with a preheating zone 1, 2 and a finishing zone 3. One or more square-sectioned fireclay flues 10 are provided in the hearth 11 to allow most of the combustion gases from the zone 3 to by-pass the firing chamber, part 2 of the preheating zone, on their way to the exhaust stack 8. There may be more than one such finishing and/or preheating zone.
