Abstract
872,412. Funnel kilns: HANLEY, W. L. Aug. 24, 1959, No. 28848/59. Class 51 (2). The firing section of a tunnel kiln for firing ceramics comprises superposed burners 13 and 26 disposed respectively behind firebrick baffles 27 and 28 directing the hot gases on to the ware 22 stacked on cars 21, and, alternating with the burners, lower flues 14 having dampers 19 communicating with a main flue 15 having an extraction fan. The ware is stacked to provide horizontal and vertical passages 23 and 20, respectively. The baffles 27 and 28 prevent direct contact of flames and the ware, and are formed with projections 30 inhibiting downward flow of hot gases direct to the flues. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the flues 14 and 15 are dispensed with, waste gases being exhausted towards the entrance end of the kiln.
