Abstract
898,227. Shaft furnaces. KOPPERS G.m.b.H., HEINRICH. June 30, 1958 [July 5, 1957], No. 20890/58. Class 51 (2). A shaft furnace for burning loose ceramic material comprises a refractory shaft 10 with a widened wall in the burning zone having mixing chambers 13 therein disposed tangentially of the shaft, slots 14 discharging the air/gas mixture for flameless combustion in the charge interstices, and offtakes 17 leading to a main flue 18. Heated air is supplied by a duct 15 coiled round the lower part of the shaft and goes through ducts 16. The shaft diameter is preferably not more than 500 mm. A modification, Fig. 3.(not shown), has a central flue formed with waste gas ports, and another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), is of rectangular cross-section with air/gas nozzles and waste gas offtakes in opposite walls.
