Abstract

742,802. Shaft furnaces. VICKERSARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Feb. 2, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 3043/53. Class 51 (2). In a shaft furnace for burning cement or lime or for sintering ores &c., the upper wide shaft portion 1 converges at 4 to a narrow section 2 of the same diameter as a frusto-conical baffle 9 defining a combustion chamber 8 with the surrounding charge material, a gas, oil or pulverulent coal burner 7 extending into said combustion chamber from a walkway 5 extending through the shaft and formed with peep holes 24. Raw material is charged through a hopper 14 and discharged through locks 13, air supplied by a fan 11 being taken off by a chimney 12. In a modification, Fig. 2, air taken off through ports 17 by a fan 16 is delivered by a pipe 18 to the burner as primary combustion air or back into the shaft through ports 18A as secondary combustion air. A fan 19 draws off air and gases through ports 20 delivering them into the preheating section of the shaft at 21, and creating a downdraught in the shaft between the burner and the ports 20. The walkway 5 may be omitted, in which case peep holes are provided extending from the combustion chamber to the exterior of the shaft, Fig. 4 (not, shown).
