Abstract
471,052. Tunnel furnaces. FABRIQUE DE PORCELAINE LANGENTHAL SOC. ANON. Jan. 21, 1936, No. 1963. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1935. [Class 51 (ii)] In an electrically-heated tunnel furnace for firing. porcelain or like ware re-' quiring a reducing atmosphere at a certain stage in the heating operation, the reducing gas, consisting mainly of carbon monoxide, is produced from solid and liquid fuels supplied to and partially burnt in stationary chambers located outside the furnace tunnel but in direct communication therewith. In the construction shown, a series of gas-producing chambers d is disposed in the side wall of the furnace, fuel, e.g. wood in small pieces, being fed thereto through ducts c by conveyers b arranged at the lower end of gas-tight hoppers a. The gas generated enters the tunnel through nozzles f in which are fitted the sensitive elements c of a carbon monoxide measuring device, the latter controlling the operation of the conveyers b and thus effecting automatic regulation of the carbon monoxide supply. When metal heating elements i are employed, the nozzles f terminate, as shown, flush with the inner face of the chamotte masonry h, but in the case of ceramic elements, they preferably project into the interior of the tunnel.
